Kusal Mendis’ ex-coach Sumith Fernando dies after altercation with cricketer before India Tests

Veteran Sri Lankan cricket coach Sumith Fernando has died in a Colombo hospital after suffering injuries in a physical altercation with young players during a training session. The 62-year-old, who mentored Sri Lanka ODI captain Kusal Mendis during his school years, died on Tuesday while receiving treatment.

The incident took place on August 8 at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club grounds in Colombo after a dispute over the availability of drinking water. Notably, the tragedy has shocked Sri Lanka’s cricketing community just days before the team hosts India in a two-match Test series, starting on August 15.

According to local reports, the incident began when a group of young cricketers training at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club went to a water tap but found no running water. A heated argument then broke out between the players and Sumith Fernando, who worked at the venue.

The argument escalated after Fernando allegedly attempted to assault one of the players. A 17-year-old cricketer reportedly struck back during the confrontation, leaving Fernando injured. He was taken to Colombo National Hospital for treatment but died while receiving medical care on Tuesday.

According to Sri Lanka Mirror, “The suspect is a resident of Liyanagemulla, Seeduwa. According to preliminary investigations, a group of cricketers, including the suspect, who were undergoing training at the grounds, had gone to a water tap to drink water but found that no water was available.

“An argument reportedly broke out between the players and a club employee. Police said the employee had allegedly attempted to assault one of the players.”

Police Investigate Sumith Fernando’s Cause of Death

The incident occurred on August 8, and authorities arrested the 17-year-old player on Monday on suspicion of assault. As the accused is a minor, the Colombo Magistrate’s Court placed him under the care of the Department of Probation and Childcare Services until August 17.

The exact circumstances surrounding Fernando’s death remain under investigation. Medical records reportedly showed that the 62-year-old had a pre-existing heart condition, prompting authorities to examine whether his injuries or an underlying medical issue caused his death.

Police are also collecting statements and examining the events that led to the confrontation. The investigation will determine the circumstances of the altercation and the events that followed before Fernando was taken to hospital.

Sumith Fernando’s Contribution to Sri Lankan Cricket

Sumith Fernando had a long association with Sri Lankan grassroots cricket and previously coached at Prince of Wales College in Moratuwa. He helped develop several young cricketers during his coaching career, including Kusal Mendis during his school days.

Fernando later worked as a curator at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club, which competes in Sri Lanka’s domestic first-class cricket structure. His work across coaching and ground preparation made him a familiar figure in the country’s local cricket community.

Fernando’s funeral was held on Thursday, with family members, former students and members of the cricket community paying their final respects. His death has affected Sri Lankan cricket.
