The NCAA has approved an expansion of the D3 national championship field by 30 student-athletes. The new field will be in effect for the next NCAA Championship meet in spring 2027. The new format will invite an additional 3 divers and 27 swimmers to the meet in accordance with the existing selection procedures.

The move was recommended in December 2025 by the NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Committee with a goal of bringing participation ratios in line between men and women.
The previous access ratio based on 2024-2025 numbers was 1 qualifier per 16.98 participants in D3 swimming for men and 1 qualifier for 15.65 participants in D3 swimming for women. The new cap is estimated to reduce the participant ratio for men to 15.22.
The NCAA generally views its championship fields as ratios of total participation nationally. The swimming & diving ratios imply about a 6.5% rate of advancement to the NCAA Championships.
The proposal included an estimated budget impact of $83,000-$88,000.
There was a secondary proposal to increase the cap by 19 swimmers and 0 divers, if the larger 30 athlete cap was not approved.
The committee argued in its legislative notes that there are not currently enough invited swimmers to fill out two full heats in some events. In each of the last two years, the swimmers invited by event have been either 16 or 17, with optional entries filling most races deeper (between 22 and 57 in each individual event).
The committee also cited the anticipated increase in talent trickling down to the Division 3 level among roster caps and other changes at the Division I level.
Due to changes at the Division I level (e.g., roster limits and men’s swimming programs being cut), the committee anticipates a trickle-down effect of those male student-athletes participating at the Division II and/or Division III level. An increase in the cap on male participants at the championship will help accommodate those student-athletes.
The selection procedure for the NCAA Championships is otherwise unchanged.
The 2027 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships will take place from March 17-20 at the Greensboro Aquatics Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.
