Alcaraz and Sinner dominated the 2024 and 2025 ATP campaigns, winning eight consecutive Grand Slam titles combined.

Their ironclad grasp on the Tour has faltered in 2026, and Alexander Zverev has capitalised.

Alcaraz won one Grand Slam this season before suffering a long-term wrist injury that saw him miss Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

The Spaniard returned at the US Open and was beaten in the quarter-finals by Ben Shelton.

Sinner also captured one major title – at Wimbledon – before being forced to skip the US Open due to a knee injury.

Zverev has taken full advantage of Sinner and Alcaraz’s woes, winning more Grand Slam titles than any other player on the Tour this year.

Seeing Zverev disrupt their dominance will surely be a significant motivating factor for Sinner and Alcaraz heading into the 2027 campaign.

When fit and firing, Alcaraz and Sinner are the best players on the Tour; one cannot imagine that either player has been best pleased while watching Alexander Zverev’s succeed in their absence.

One expects that Sinner and Alcaraz will return to Grand Slam events in 2027 with a vengeance and dominate proceedings on the ATP Tour once again.

Alcaraz and Zverev contested one of the best matches of the season in the Australian Open semi-finals.

Zverev looked set to make his second consecutive appearance in the Melbourne final when he served for the match at 4-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 5-4.

Alcaraz refused to be denied, rattling off three consecutive games to advance.

The Spaniard went on to triumph in Melbourne, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.

Jannik Sinner handed Zverev his second major loss of the year in the Wimbledon final.

In what was a close-fought contest, Sinner successfully defended his title with a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory on Centre Court.
