World Aquatics World Cup #2 – Tashkent

We saw our first World Cup record of the Tashkent stop go down, courtesy of Olympic champion and World Record holder Cameron McEvoy of Australia.

Racing in the final of the men’s 50m freestyle this evening, 32-year-old McEvoy ripped a time of 20.13 to grab the gold.

That beat out Russian rival Egor Kornev who settled for silver in 20.61, as fellow Aussie Isaac Cooper rounded out the podium in the only other sub-21-second result of 20.84.

Kornev has been as fast as 20.26 from the first stop in Baku, so the Russian was well outside that mark this evening. Cooper’s time, on the other hand, was only .03 off the lifetime best of 20.81 he notched at the 2024 Australian SC Championships.

As for McEvoy, his effort this evening sliced .09 off the World Cup benchmark of 20.22 he put on the books at the first stop of this season’s World Cup in Baku. It also now establishes a new Australian and Oceanian record in the event.

Although McEvoy has a ways to go to get into the 19.90 Jordan Crooks‘ World Record territory, the new dad now ranks as the 2nd-best performer in history.
