Anna Moesch, Ahmed Jaouadi Power Virginia, Florida Split
Anna Moesch and Ahmed Jaouadi were among the stars as Virginia and Florida split a dual meet in Charlottesville on Saturday.
The UVA women took care of business with a 205-57 victory over the Gators. Ditto the Florida men, who won by a 144-117 margin in a cross-conference clash of national powers.
Moesch led the way by winning the 50 free in 21.44 seconds, a 1-2-3 result for the Cavaliers that included Melissa Nwakalor going 21.80 for second. Moesch won the 100 fly in 51.95 ahead of teammate Lana Pudar’s 52.31.
Moesch anchored UVA’s winning 200 medley relay with Sara Curtis, Smilte Plytnykaite and Claire Curzan that went 1:33.54. She and Nwakalor were on a split 400 free relay squad that finished second by .12 seconds, the win going to the squad of Nina Jazy, Curtis, Curzan and Plytnykaite in 3:11.47 in a salutary show of dominance by the Cavs.

Curtis won the 100 free, her time of 47.15 edging Curzan by .12 seconds. Curzan, who took part in the UVA Pro Am, won the 100 back in 49.37. The freshman Plytnykaite won the 100 breaststroke in 59.51, a second up on Sophia Umstead. Pudar claimed the 200 fly in 1:55.16, and Emma Redman won the 200 breast in 2:09.80.
Florida’s lone win on the women’s side came in the 200 back, with Jo Jo Ramey winning in 1:53.39.
The men’s meet was considerably closer, but Florida’s depth carried the day. Jaouadi started it, going 8:43.27 to win the 1,000 free by 15 seconds. He later won the 500 free in 4:18.32, with teammate Luke Corey second.
Nil Cadevall did the breaststroke double, winning the 100 in 52.71 seconds and the 200 in 1:53.33. Cadevall teamed with Jonny Marshall, Scotty Buff and Devin Dilger to win the 200 medley relay in 1:23.24, a great race won over the Cavaliers by .13 seconds.
Marshall won the 100 back by going 45.44. Dilger was second and Buff third in the 50 free, then Dilger was second in the 100 free.
The final relay was another showdown, decided by .09 seconds. Dilger split 42.11 off the front to lead the team of Aiden Norman, Buff and Marvin Johnston to the win in 2:49.92.
Virginia went 1-2 in the 200 free, David King setting a pool record with his victorious time of 1:32.31. He added the 200 back crown in 1:39.57, besting Florida’s Norman and Marshall. Thomas Heilman swept the butterfly events, going 1:40.75 to win the 200 and 45.11 to win the 100. Maximus Williamson won the 50 freestyle in 19.17 and the 100 free in 41.73. His split of 41.21 made the 400 free relay interesting, and King’s 42.12 coming home nearly closed down the distance.
