The Indian River State College swimming and diving teams are on the chopping block.
According to the agenda for the college’s Board of Trustees Governance & Legislative Affairs Committee meeting scheduled for Oct. 27, the committee will consider a request to approve recommendations from President Timothy Moore and his cabinet that would eliminate both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.
If approved, the change would be effective at the start of the 2027-28 academic year.
Indiana River College, located in Fort Pierce, Fla., competes in Division I of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and its swim & dive teams have had a historic dynasty for over five decades.
The men’s team won its 52nd consecutive NJCAA title this past March, extending the longest active championship streak in all of college athletics, while the Pioneers women’s program won its 48th straight championship.
Indian River State College’s Board of Trustees just requested that they “eliminate” both the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving programs.Further proof that regardless of your success in the water, an administration won’t check your percentage of “best times” before cutting you.52 consecutive national championships for the men and 48 for the women. Our sport continues to be a top choice for cost saving / funding reallocation for the “big sports”We knew this was coming and we need to do more to protect our sports before it’s too late.— Kyle Sockwell (@kylesockwell) October 20, 2026
According to the agenda, if the swim & dive teams are eliminated, the school would transition the rest of its athletic programs—baseball, softball and men’s basketball—to NJCAA Division II. The school’s women’s volleyball team is already competing in Division II, while the agenda also notes that the reinstatement of the women’s basketball team for 2028-29 will be discussed. The team was eliminated at the end of the 2023-24 season.
The Indian River College swim & dive teams are led by head coach Sion Brinn, a former member of the Pioneers from 1991 until 1993 who competed at two Olympic Games, representing Jamaica in 1996 and Great Britain in 2000. Brinn has been the team’s head coach since 2013.
There are currently 22 women and 21 men on the Indian River State swim & dive rosters.
The men are already 2-0 on the 2026-27 season, defeating Division I Florida Atlantic in September and NAIA St. Thomas last weekend, while the women are 1-1 after falling to FAU and topping the Bobcats.
SwimSwam has reached out to the school for clarification on why the swimming and diving teams are being proposed for elimination but has not yet received a response.
