2026 Short Course World Trials

The pre-scratch psych sheets are out for the 2026 USA Swimming Short Course World Trials.

Headlining the psych sheets are Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass, and Ilya Kharun. Walsh, who had a very impressive showing at the last SC World Championships, is entered in five events next week, the 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, and 100 IM. She is the world record holder in the short course 50 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, and 100 IM.

Kate Douglass is the world record holder in the short course 100 free, and she is entered in seven events, including the 100 free: 50 free, 100 free, 50 fly, 100 breast, 200 breast, 100 IM, and 200 IM. She also holds the world record in the 200 breast and 200 IM.

Ilya Kharun will be racing his first meet as an official member of USA Swimming as he tries to earn qualification for his first United States international team since changing his international designation. Kharun is entered in the 50 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, and 200 fly.

Claire Weinstein also appears on the psych sheet and, if she swims, she will be racing her first meet since missing the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships due to viral meningitis. She is entered in the 200 free, 400 free, and 800 free events.

Notably absent from the meet are Luke Barr, Carson Foster, and Shaine Casas. Barr and Foster both appeared to earn qualifying spots through the wild card entries for the world championships. Anna Peplowski looked to be the 3rd athlete to earn the wild card spot for the United States, but she is entered in the meet while Casas is absent.

Peplowski is entered in the 200 free and 400 free events as the top seed in both.

Katie Ledecky and Bobby Finke are two other absences, though they have not typically raced at the SC World Championships.

Men

Selection Procedure

The meet has a 40 athlete roster cap, coming in at 20 per gender. This means that the priorities will look a little different than we are used to for the long course World Championships and Olympics selection meets.

  1. Priority 1: The top two finishing swimmers in the 100 and 200 free
  2. Priority 2: The top finishing swimmer in every event other than the 100 and 200 free
  3. Priority 3: The 2nd finishing swimmer in every event other than the 100 and 200 free
  4. Priority 4: The 3rd finishing swimmer in the 100 free
  5. Priority 5: The 3rd finishing swimmer in the 200 free
  6. Priority 6: The 4th finishing swimmer in the 100 free
  7. Priority 7: The 4th finishing swimmer in the 200 free

If more than 20 swimmers would be added to the meet, the swimmers from priority 3 will be added based on the percentage of the AQUA ‘A’ standard for each individual swim. The highest percentages will be added first.
