Kai van Westering broke the national 200 back record as four swimmers booked their trips to the World Short Course Championships on the first day of the Dutch Qualifiers in Rotterdam.

The four-day meet offers swimmers the opportunity to add their names to the Netherlands team for December’s global meet in Beijing.

Marrit Steenbergen, Caspar Corbeau and Sean Niewold had already booked their places during the World Cup series earlier this month while Koen de Groot’s selection was confirmed.

Van Westering sliced a 1.09sec chunk off Nick Driebergen’s Dutch standard that had stood since December 2010 to add his name to the roster.

Maaike de Waard captured two titles with a 24.93 championship 50 fly record plus a 57.24 win in the 100 back to book a trip to China and Kim Busch also qualified in the former in 25.40 with Jinth Englese setting a Dutch junior record of 25.71.

Sean Niewold won the 50 fly (22.62) and was the first Dutchman home in the 100IM in 52.84, 0.05 behind Canadian Javier Acevedo (52.79) to add two more events to his Beijing programme.

Imani de Jong set a championship record in the 400m freestyle (4:01.51) to go inside the cut. Jason van den Berg (26.45) became Dutch champion in the 50 breast, as did Tiago Fonseca Gomes (3:43.91) in the 400 free and Mare Schallenberg (2:13.97) in the 200IM.

Tes Schouten and Thomas Jansen need to rubber-stamp their selection during the meet after both swam inside the cut curing the World Cup. South African Tatjana Smith goes in the 100 breast on Friday as she continues her journey back from retirement.

Six Dutch titles were divided among three swimmers and featured two world records and one European mark. Rogier Dorsman captured three titles, including a world record in the 50 fly (27.06). Irene van Drimmelen won two golds, with a European record in the 50m butterfly (34.14) and a world record in the 100 back (1:15.81). Bas Takken became Dutch champion in the men’s 400 free in 4:07.59.
