52nd NICO SAPIO TROPHY
The 52nd Nico Sapio Trophy begins on October 30th from the Sciorba Swimming Pool in Genoa, with the two-day affair representing an important stepping stone along the path to November’s Italian Short Course Championships.
While that competition represents the primary qualification opportunity for this year’s Short Course World Championships, performances put up in Genoa this weekend may also be taken into consideration when determining Italy’s team for Beijing.
Per the qualification criteria for SC Worlds, the top three athletes at the 2026 European Championships have already earned slots, with the remaining openings being determined from the Italian Championships and this Nico Sapio.
Based on this criteria, Thomas Ceccon, Simone Cerasuolo, Sara Curtis, Anita Gastaldi, Nicolo Martinenghi, Benedetta Pilato, Simona Quadarella, Alberto Razzetti, Carlos D’Ambrosio, Emma Virginia Menicucci and Alessandra Mao have already made the grade for Beijing.
The Nico Sapio Trophy is held in memory of the RAI journalist who died along with the national team in the crash of the Lufthansa Convair landing in Bremen in 1966. The meeting is organized by Nuoto My Sport with the support of the Italian Swimming Federation.
Among the swimmers expected to race this weekend include Alberto Razzetti, Lorenzo Ballarati, Francesco Lazzari, and Andrea Camozzi.
