Stan Wawrinka played all four Grand Slam tournaments in the final season of his career.
Wawrinka retired at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, where he lost in the first round to Jiri Lehecka.
This brought an end to the 24-year professional career of Wawrinka, who won three Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open (2014), Roland Garros (2015) and the US Open (2016).
Wawrinka played his last Grand Slam match at the US Open, where he was beaten in the first round by a former major finalist.
Matteo Berrettini beat Stan Wawrinka in his last two Grand Slam matches
Wawrinka was not actually supposed to play the US Open this year, after he was controversially not announced as one of the wildcards for the New York major. However, following the withdrawal of Patrick Kypson, Wawrinka received a late wildcard for his last US Open.
The Swiss was handed a tough first-round draw against former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, who Wawrinka also lost to in the first round of Wimbledon.
Wawrinka and Berrettini played a dramatic four-set match at Wimbledon this year, but their US Open match was a lot more one-sided. Berrettini would come out on top, as he beat Wawrinka 7-6(4), 7-6(3), 6-0 to end his Grand Slam career, before they had a warm embrace at the net.

Despite being unable to win one more match at the US Open, Wawrinka spoke about how grateful he was to receive the support he did and stated that he was generally happy with the level he produced.
“Yeah, it was, again, amazing atmosphere, that’s for sure,” said in his press conference. “That’s for me the most important is one more opportunity to play in this tournament. Of course, I was super happy to receive the wild card to come here.
“For me it was — in general, to cover the match, it was a good level for two sets. I had many opportunities first and second. I couldn’t take them. It’s, of course, always more and more difficult when you win less and less match to get the confidence to finish those sets, so it was a bit difficult.
“But I think the level during two sets was really high, and the atmosphere, of course, and the support was really special. Knowing that it was my last time here, it’s never easy, that’s for sure, especially when you love something so much and you enjoy it so much.
“All the time to get to that level for me it was important. I was happy with the level, in general. I was super grateful with the support I received tonight.”

Who is the last player Stan Wawrinka beat in a Grand Slam match?
Although Wawrinka did not win a match in his final US Open, he did win two Grand Slam matches in the final season of his career. Wawrinka won 10 matches in his final season, and two of these came at the Australian Open.
Wawrinka won his first round match against Laslo Djere, which was his first win at the Australian Open since 2021. The former world number three then backed this up with an even more dramatic five-set victory over Arthur Gea.
This ended up being the final Grand Slam win of Wawrinka’s career, as he lost in the third round to Taylor Fritz.
Wawrinka would then lose in the first round of the three remaining Grand Slams, being beaten by lucky loser Jesper de Jong at Roland Garros, before losing to Berrettini at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Despite the Australian Open being the first Grand Slam title Wawrinka ever won and the only major where he won matches this year, it is actually the US Open where he ends his career with the greatest win percentage, having won 73.02% of his matches in New York.
