It took no time at all to see some fireworks on day 2 of the US Short Course World Championship trials, as Tyler Ray, who was racing out of the very first heat of the session, matched Noe Ponti‘s US Open record of 48.47 to claim the top seed in men’s 100 butterfly finals for this evening.
Ray was not considered a heavy favorite to win this event, largely because of the star power the event offers here, with the likes of Ilya Kharun, Caeleb Dressel, and Luca Urlando, to name a few.
Ray fired out of the gates with a purpose, having just raced at the UVA SCM Worlds Prep meet two weeks ago, winning this event over a strong field in 49.56, which was the fastest time of his career.
He turned at the halfway point in 22.97, which was tied for the 4th-fastest among the top 8 finishers; he made magic on the back half, delivering a blistering 25.50, more than three tenths faster than anyone else in the event.
That performance now ranks him atop the world rankings this season, taking over Japan’s Tomonobu Gomi‘s 48.58 from the Japan Swimming Championships earlier this month.
In that prelim, Urlando (48.66), Kharun (48.92), Dressel (49.86), Dare Rose (50.02), and Logan Robinson (50.28) also found their way into the top 20 globally this season.
That time also moves him up to a tie for 2nd all-time for US perfromers with Tom Shields‘s 2020 ISL Final performance of 48.47.
