Canelo Rejects Shortcuts, Mbilli Promises an Upset
Canelo returns after Terence Crawford beat him in September 2025. At Thursday’s press conference, he explained why he chose to challenge Mbilli.
“I don’t believe in shortcuts. I want to become a world champion again, and that’s why I want to face the best. Mbilli is the world champion.”
The challenger also dismissed the idea that losing his belts had changed his belief in himself.
“I’m the challenger now, but in my mind, I’ve always been the champion, ever since I was a little kid,” Canelo said.
Mbilli enters his first defence of the full WBC title after a split draw with Lester Martinez.
“I’m ready to shock the world,” Mbilli said.
He acknowledged Canelo’s achievements while drawing a clear line between respect and their coming fight.
“I have a lot of respect for Canelo and his career, and I congratulate him on everything he has achieved. But inside the ring, it will be a different story, and I’m coming to win.”
Asked whether he could knock Canelo out, Mbilli answered: “We’ll see, we’ll see. That’s why you shouldn’t miss the fight. There will be some big surprises.”
