Rafael Nadal ended his career without ever winning the title at the Paris Masters.

Nadal is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, winning 22 Grand Slam titles, 36 Masters 1000 titles, as well as Olympic gold medals in both singles and doubles.

The city where Nadal achieved his greatest career success was in Paris, having won Roland Garros a record 14 times in his career.

Despite his dominance at Roland Garros, Nadal was never able to win a single title at the other tournament in the French capital, the Paris Masters, before he retired from tennis in 2024.

Rafael Nadal never won the Paris Masters in his career

Nadal nearly won the title in his first ever appearance at the Paris Masters, as he dropped just one set en route to the final. It was in this final where he would play unseeded David Nalbandian, who beat Nadal in an emphatic 6-4, 6-0 win.

After Nalbandian won the title, even he admitted to being surprised at just how comfortable he was in his victory over Nadal.

“All week I was playing great, and I don’t know why the result was so easy,” Nalbandian said at the time. “After I broke him, I felt that I was playing better than him. I played more relaxed, started hitting winners almost from everywhere. That gave me confidence.”

This was the only time Nadal reached the final of the Paris Masters, but he did make runs to the latter stages of the tournament that were often halted by injury. This includes the year after he reached the final of the Paris Masters, where Nadal made it to the quarter-finals before retiring after losing the first set against Nikolay Davydenko due to a right knee injury.

Nadal made it one step further in 2009, as he reached the semi-finals, but he was comfortably beaten by rival Novak Djokovic. Nadal would then not return to the tournament for four years, but he would reach the semi-finals again before being beaten by his compatriot David Ferrer.

Stan Wawrinka would beat Nadal in the 2015 quarter-finals, with his next two appearances at the Paris Masters then being ended by injury. Nadal would come close to the title again in 2020, when he would reach the semi-finals before losing to Alexander Zverev.

Despite not winning the title, Nadal had reached at least the quarter-finals in all of his first eight appearances at the Paris Masters. However, this streak ended in Nadal’s ninth and final appearance at the Paris Masters, where he lost his opening match at the tournament to Tommy Paul.

Year Nadal played the Paris Masters Result
2007 Final – Lost to David Nalbandian, 6-4 6-0

2020 Semi-final – Lost to Alexander Zverev, 6-4 7-5
2022 Second Round – Lost to Tommy Paul, 3-6 7-6(4) 6-1

Nadal did not return to the Paris Masters in his career before he retired in 2024, making it one of the few big tournaments he did not win.

At Masters 1000 level tournaments and above, the only titles Nadal did not win in his career were at the ATP Finals, the Miami Open, the Shanghai Masters and the Paris Masters. Two of these tournaments were on indoor hard courts, with Nadal winning just one title on indoor hard courts in his entire career.
