The 2026 Hungarian Short Course Championships are set to begin tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4th, with the four-day competition representing an opportunity for some of the nation’s top athletes to vie for titles and domestic hardware.
While big guns to the tune of Kristof Milak and Hubert Kos are not expected to race this week, the competition still carries elite athletes such as Richard Marton, Szebasztian Szabo and Vivien Jackl.
Of note, this competition is not a qualifying affair, as the Hungarian national team coach Csaba Sos recently announced that the country will not be sending even remotely a full squad to the Short Course World Championships.
Only Kos and Milak have been extended the chance to race in Beijing, with Sos saying the former will ‘definitely be in Beijing’, while the latter has been ‘given the opportunity’ if he wishes to race.
Instead, a large Hungarian contingent will be traveling and participating in the U.S. Open taking place a month from now.
Per a report seen on M4Sport, Sos revealed that the date and location of the Chinese World Championships do not really fit into the preparation of the national squad – due to the time difference, a lot of work could be wasted on acclimatization – and in addition, the World Swimming Championships will be held in Budapest next year.
Budapest also hosted the last edition of SC Worlds, with Hungary finishing 7th in the overall medal table. Kos captured 100m back silver and 200m back gold, while Zalan Sarkany earned 800m free gold and the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay secured the silver medal position.
