Following her latest win in New York, Andreeva delivered her verdict on Gauff’s game.

Mirra Andreeva says Coco Gauff has been more ‘aggressive’ at this year’s US Open

During her latest post-match press conference, Andreeva said the following.

“I mean, I think we all know that Coco [Gauff] is a great fighter,” she said.

“So I feel like not one point is going to be easy if I play her. No matter what is going to happen, the match is going to be tough.

“And I think she is now also improving even more, her serve is better, I was watching a little bit of how she was playing earlier in the tournament, I felt she was trying to go into the net a little bit more, trying to be more aggressive, so, of course, it’s not going to be easy if I play her.

“We’ll try to prepare our best to show a good level of tennis and for me to try to play my best and hopefully get the result that I want.”

Andreeva believes Gauff has improved since they last played, which is bad news for this year’s French Open champion.

She is 0-5 against the world number four, and lost their previous US Open meeting in straight sets.

The cards are certainly stacked against Andreeva, but you shouldn’t count her out.

Andreeva has improved so much this year and won her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

Her form then dipped, but she seems to have recovered in New York.

“When I was coming into this tournament, I didn’t really know what to expect,” said Andreeva.

“My results here were not the best, my best result was third round.

“But I didn’t expect much, for some reason I seem to not be able to find my rhythm here.

“And now, so far I think it’s going not bad, but I don’t know, I just kind of feel like I’m more at peace, I’m not as demanding of myself anymore.

“So, after winning the French Open, I felt like every match I played, I had to win, because I won the biggest tournament of my life.

“Now, I just approach it; I won, not a Grand Slam, just another tournament. I’m just trying to forget that it was a Grand Slam, try not to think about it, not overthink, and just let it go – easy, chill, enjoy, and that’s how I approach things right now.”

That approach has led Andreeva to wins over Janice Tjen, Eva Lys, Nikola Bartunkova, and Anastasia Potapova at the US Open this year.

Whether it can take her a step further into the semi-finals remains to be seen.

Four women are in the hunt for world number one at the US Open: Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Gauff.

Andreeva, the world number five, isn’t quite within reach, but she could become world number two if she takes the title.

To do so, she must beat Gauff in the quarter-finals, Rybakina or Qinwen Zheng in the semi-finals, and Sabalenka, Linda Noskova, Pegula, or Emma Navarro in the final.

From the quarter-finals to the final, she could face three players with an average ranking of 2.3.

For context, the three players she met in the quarters, semis, and final to win the French Open had an average rank of 49…
