The Young Bucks’ tag team title run took an unexpected turn after a big loss on AEW Dynamite, signaling that this reign could be different.

Putting an arguably more interesting spin on the story of a history making title reign, the massive squash from the Don Callis Family could signal a creative spin on the expected.

Hard fought battle at AEW WrestleDream 2026

AEW stars Young Bucks after retaining titles at WrestleDream 2026

With the decisive loss on tonight’s October 21 edition of Dynamite, the Young Bucks didn’t have their titles on the line but certainly seem to be having a rough go of it lately.

Taking a squash victory from the Don Callis Family duo of Mark Davis and Jake Doyle, Matt Jackson took the brunt of the brutality after taking multiple pile drivers before the eventual match finish saw both champs laid out.

With the massive loss being able to serve as not only a testament to the power and strength of Davis and Doyle, it also points back to the Young Bucks’ match at AEW WrestleDream 2026.

While the Young Bucks narrowly escaped Orlando with their AEW Tag Team Championship after facing off against another Don Callis Family duo of Kevin Knight and Kyle Fletcher – they certainly appear to be worse for the wear.

The Young Bucks still have something to prove

Although Matt and Nick Jackson have spent years establishing themselves as a defining tag teams of their generation, the story they could be building may take an entirely different take on a championship reign.

While the Young Bucks were formative in building not only AEW but specifically the tag team division, they’ve held championships multiple times (as a tag team and trios with The Elite) and established themselves within the brand’s identity – their reputation offers a unique opportunity for a new storyline in professional wrestling.

Rather than the beleaguered veterans who are struggling against the new stars, attempting to hold them at bay – the Young Bucks story could prove unique in showing that all the experience, accolades and position in the company still can’t guarantee that they’ll come out on top.

Instead of their championship reign proving that they’re the best tag team in the world, their battle could be intensely more personal and character driven.

Why this loss matters

Young Bucks

The Young Bucks don’t need another championship reign to prove their legacy. They could use this one to help build the future — even if that means getting humbled along the way.

While the traditional professional wrestling logic could be that the Young Bucks ultimately ‘put over’ one tag team, the one that ultimately ends up besting them for the AEW Tag Team Championship – the duo have a unique opportunity.

By introducing doubt into their storyline through a series of devastating losses or near losses, the reign serves to elevate the entire tag team division rather than just demonstrate the already established excellence of the Young Bucks.

Making whatever team ends up finally taking the titles from the Bucks even more meaningful, the Young Bucks would leave the tag team division better overall for telling a more compelling story of adversity within achievement.
