Novak Djokovic is back in action this week, as he makes his long-awaited return to Basel after a 15-year absence.

The Serbian’s presence at this ATP 500 event came as a surprise to many when it was announced, but all became clear once his ATP Finals aspirations were revealed.

Despite snubbing the tournament in consecutive seasons, this time, he wants to play.

It’s almost ironic that Novak Djokovic will now have to fight so hard for qualification, when he would have done so easily in 2024 and 2025.

However, when looking upon his Swiss Indoors draw, fans will be fearing the worst of boosting his chances of reaching this prestigious end-of-year showdown.

Novak Djokovic’s projected nightmare draw at the Swiss Indoors

The 39-year-old will start his campaign in the Swiss capital against Ugo Humbert, a player currently ranked 38th in the world and more than capable of causing an upset.

This typifies the renewed strength of these ATP 500 tournaments, which have only increased in stature following the elongation of Masters 1000 events in recent seasons.

If Djokovic can win that opening-round clash, he is likely to face the big-serving Jan-Lennard Struff.

It’s projected that one of Casper Ruud or Nuno Borges would then be his quarter-final opponent, with Jiri Lehecka and Ben Shelton expected to battle it out for a semi-final spot.

Then, anyone from Taylor Fritz to Rafael Jodar and even Arthur Fils could make it to the final.

On paper, this is an absolute gauntlet for Djokovic to face, and his chances seem slim. However, there is one statistic which should make the 24-time Grand Slam champion feel confident that even these many top-ranked stars cannot stop him from snatching this silverware once again.

Why Novak Djokovic should feel confident in Basel despite tough draw

Given the disastrous past week Djokovic has endured without even playing, Vienna has arguably become even more important for his ATP Finals chances.

Fortunately, there’s cause for great optimism, given his record against all of the aforementioned stars.

When compiling Djokovic’s head-to-heads against each and every one of the nine players referenced, he has a combined record of 30 wins and just one loss.

That defeat came to Ruud in the 2024 Monte Carlo quarter-finals.

How would you feel if Novak Djokovic got a wildcard to the ATP Finals?

Is there any changes you’d make to the current qualification system?

Daniil Medvedev recently said whether the ATP Finals should consider a wildcard due to Djokovic’s current situation, but he would not want to be gifted this opportunity.

A champion as competitive as he is will likely thrive on this new underdog status.
