Austin Smotherman WITB: Bermuda winner’s setup conquered windy conditions | Gear
Austin Smotherman is on an absolute heater.
Just weeks after his maiden PGA Tour win at the Bank of Utah Championship, he backed it up by capturing the Butterfield Bermuda Championship in a sudden-death Monday playoff.
Mother Nature tried to completely wreck the script at Port Royal Golf Course, with heavy Atlantic gales howling so fiercely they wiped out Sunday’s scheduled final round. That forced the PGA Tour to call the event official after 54 holes, leaving Smotherman and Seamus Power to face off in a Monday playoff.
Smotherman and Power finished regulation deadlocked at 16-under par (197) and faced off on the brutal par-3 16th hole Monday morning. The pair went toe-to-toe through the first two extra loops, both carding calm pars while the wind whipped off the ocean. On the third extra hole, Power finally blinked and made bogey, leaving Smotherman to comfortably two-putt his way to his second trophy in less than a month and another $1,080,000 payday.
When you look at the week’s performance stats in Bermuda, a couple of numbers jump off the page. Smotherman finished tied for first in Strokes Gained: Total (10.684), doing damage across the board while ranking seventh in SG: Off The Tee (2.821) and 10th in SG: Approach to Green (4.143). But the real secret sauce was his ability to clean up when things missed the target: he got up-and-down at an 80.00% clip to rank T11 in Scrambling (12/15), paired with a rock-solid Greens in Regulation mark of 72.22% (39/54) that kept him out of the deep coastal trouble.
To put up numbers like that in the wind, his gear choices had to be dialed to perfection.
Off the tee, his Titleist GT3 (10°, A1 hosel) with a Project X HZRDUS Smoke RDX Black 60 TX shaft served as the engine behind his 7th-ranked SG: Off the Tee performance and 289.80-yard driving average.
