Holger Rune’s journey back to the pinnacle of the ATP circuit has well and truly begun.

Rune suffered a horrific Achilles injury late last year at the Stockholm Open, forcing the Danish superstar to miss almost a year of tournament play.

Rune made his long-awaited return to competition earlier this month, and he has now notched his first win.

The Dane overcame the challenge of Quentin Halys in the Basel Open first round, triumphing 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 on Monday.

Rune is now set to make a significant jump up the ATP rankings.

Holger Rune’s performances since returning to competitive play

Rune made his return to competition at the Japan Open on October 1.

Kyrian Jacquet ensured Rune walked away from the event disappointed as he triumphed 6-3, 6-1 against the Dane in the first round.

Almost one week later, Rune faced off against German player Daniel Altmaier in the Shanghai Masters first round.

Rune again suffered defeat, falling to a 6-1, 6-7, 4-6 loss in the Chinese city.

Rune will now hope to kick on after securing his first victory since returning from injury. The 23-year-old will face either 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz or Zizou Bergs in the Basel Open second round.
