Oscar De La Hoya is making a play to sign Shakur Stevenson, but his pitch reveals Golden Boy’s real priority: staging a William Zepeda rematch. While De La Hoya sees big business in a second meeting, he has yet to outline what he would actually put on the table to secure Stevenson’s signature.

“I would love to promote a Shakur Stevenson. He’s arguably the best fighter pound-for-pound in the world. Who doesn’t want to promote him? I know what to do with him,” De La Hoya said to the media.

De La Hoya is either dreaming or running a pure promotional bluff, because the economics make zero sense.

If Dana White and Zuffa walked away from Shakur over demands of 15 million per outing, there is no world where Golden Boy can satisfy that appetite. Golden Boy operates on a standard broadcast model with DAZN. To justify a 15 to 20 million guarantee, a fighter has to generate massive pay-per-view buys, fill a football stadium, or carry commercial sponsorships at an astronomical level.

Shakur does none of that.

His pure boxing skill is undeniable, but his safety-first style has never translated into commercial box office power. Casual fans simply refuse to pay premium pay-per-view prices to watch twelve rounds of tactical potshotting and resetting. If Golden Boy put Shakur on pay-per-view against anyone other than a megastar like Gervonta Davis, the buy rate would be catastrophic. Even a rematch with William Zepeda is nowhere near big enough to cover those kinds of purses.

So what is Oscar actually doing? Most likely, De La Hoya is using Shakur’s free agency to generate free press and build up Zepeda’s profile. By publicly offering to sign Shakur and insisting Zepeda is the man who pushed him to the brink, Oscar gets the benefit of elite association without having to cut the check.

“What excites me is that who gave Shakur his toughest fight? William Zepeda, who’s getting better, who is becoming a complete fighter,” De La Hoya claimed. “So will we see that fight happen again? I would love to see it because Zepeda right now is a punching machine that now has the wit, the experience, the power, and the punch output is through the roof.”

If Oscar truly believes he can deliver 15 million purses on DAZN pay-per-view with Shakur at the top of the bill, he is setting Golden Boy up to take a massive financial bath. In reality, once real contract numbers replace public soundbites, the gap between what Shakur expects and what Golden Boy can afford will stop any deal dead in its tracks.

Money talks, yet De La Hoya skipped the finances entirely. He talked up his promotional track record, but stopped short of floating purse guarantees, a schedule, or a debut matchup.

Shakur benefits from having another major player chasing him openly. Golden Boy gets to chase a generational star while building buzz around Zepeda. De La Hoya put his cards on the table. Now, Golden Boy needs to back up the talk with a genuine contract offer.
