Denzel Bentley no longer owns the WBO middleweight belt, but picking Shane Mosley Jr. over Yoenli Hernandez makes total sense for his career. Getting stripped of a world title is never an ideal situation.

Still, surrendering the hardware outside the ring sure beats taking a beating inside it against Hernandez. Bentley was simply not going to beat that guy.

By ducking Hernandez and sacrificing the WBO title, Bentley walks into an immediately winnable booking against Mosley Jr. instead. Dan Rafael reported that the WBO Grievance Committee officially dismissed Bentley’s appeal on Friday in a massive twenty-eight-page resolution. His November 7 bout can still proceed, yet he will enter the arena without his championship.

Dropping the belt hurts his prestige, but sharing twelve rounds with Hernandez would have extracted a much steeper toll. The Cuban amateur star operates as the real power at 160 pounds right now. Stepping into that mandatory test right as his promotional tenure began would have been sheer recklessness, especially with Hernandez likely stopping him early.

Mosley Jr. gives Bentley the perfect opening platform to look good under his new banner. Nobody should treat Mosley as a complete walkover, but that pairing remains manageable compared to facing the most lethal threat in the entire division.

The real prize sits just over the horizon. Should Bentley take care of business against Mosley, he immediately positions himself for massive in-house unification opportunities. Zuffa Boxing controls both IBF champion Aaron McKenna and WBC titlist Carlos Adames. A single victory over Mosley puts Bentley in prime position to challenge McKenna or Adames for their titles, completely bypassing the Cuban buzzsaw while fighting for even bigger gold.

Hernandez gets what he deserved anyway with an unblocked route to the vacant WBO strap. For Bentley, giving up the belt preserves his market value, protects his health, and sets up a direct line to brand-new world titles down the road.
