Alexander Zverev and Marcelo Melo lost to Luke Johnson and Sander Arends in the first round of the Shanghai Masters doubles tournament.
In singles, Zverev defeated Wu Yibing in the second round of the Shanghai Masters, but couldn’t replicate that success in doubles. Partnering with Brazilian veteran Melo, Zverev fell short in the first round.
It’s not the first time they’ve suffered an early exit this season, either. The German/Brazilian duo won a title earlier this year, but haven’t won back-to-back matches together since. After Zverev’s latest defeat, we thought now would be a good time to analyse his 2026 doubles record.
Alexander Zverev has won less than 50% of the doubles matches he’s played this season
Through 20 matches, Zverev is 9-11 in doubles competition this season. He’s won eight matches with Melo, four of which came at the Mexican Open, the event they won in February. Zverev also won a match at the Laver Cup with Casper Ruud.

Zverev and Melo have lost six first-round matches this year, often struggling against more traditional doubles pairs. Today, Zverev sits 102nd in the ‘Live ATP doubles rankings’, 100 places lower than his singles ranking.
Alexander Zverev’s Live ATP Rankings
- Singles – 2nd (9,720 points)
- Doubles – 102nd (860 points)
The German didn’t play doubles at the four Grand Slams this year. Without the distraction of doubles, Zverev won the French Open and the US Open, ending his wait for a major title.
Zverev hasn’t won a singles title at the Masters 1000, ATP 500, or ATP 250 levels this year. Whether that can be attributed to the extra pressure of playing doubles at those events is open to interpretation, but it will surely be something to consider when planning his schedule for 2027.
Who will Alexander Zverev play next at the Shanghai Masters in singles?
Looking to bounce back from his doubles defeat, Zverev will return to singles action on Sunday, October 11, to take on the Frenchman, Quentin Halys. Zverev is 3-0 against Halys, picking up wins in Miami, Paris, and New York this year. He won’t want to underestimate Halys, though, after the 29-year-old pushed him to the limit at the US Open last month. Zverev defeated Halys, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, in the second round.

Looking ahead, the German could play Alexander Bublik or Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round, and Alex de Minaur, Rei Sakamoto, Karen Khachanov, or Adrian Mannarino in the quarter-finals. Then in the semi-finals, he could play the likes of Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe, before potentially meeting one of his greatest rivals, Carlos Alcaraz, in the final.
Zverev is a former finalist in Shanghai, losing to Daniil Medvedev in 2019. Only time will tell if he can go all the way in 2026. This year’s Shanghai Masters final will be played on October 18.
