Andy Murray has given his verdict on Novak Djokovic’s future plans in tennis.
Murray coached Djokovic for six months last year, coming full circle from their rivalry as players.
Since this partnership came to an end, Djokovic’s continued bid for a 25th Grand Slam title has still not come to fruition, having recently suffered a surprise loss in the first round of the US Open.
As a result, there have been a lot of questions surrounding the future of Djokovic’s career. Djokovic has previously stated his intent to play at the LA Olympics in 2028, when he would be 41 years old, and now Murray has given his verdict on this plan.

Andy Murray thinks Novak Djokovic’s goal to play the LA Olympics is ‘great for tennis’
Murray was a presence at the Laver Cup this year, and when speaking to TNT Sports he spoke about Djokovic’s plans to continue competing until the LA Olympics, which he believes is ‘great for tennis’.
“He’s obviously said that I think he wants to play through until the Olympics in LA, which is obviously great for tennis if he wants to keep going,” said Murray.
Djokovic won a gold medal at the last Olympic Games in Paris, and he will be bidding to become just the second player in history to win back-to-back singles golds in Los Angeles, something only Murray has done before.
When asked about this, Murray admitted that this is not something he had really thought about, but claimed he would not be surprised to see Djokovic achieve it.
“I hadn’t actually thought of that, but it wouldn’t surprise me,” responded Djokovic. “He’s pretty much got every single record out there. I wouldn’t put it past him to achieve something like that. He’s got such a strong mind that when he really commits to something and, you know, wants to achieve something, yeah.
“But I just also know that once you get to that stage of your career, you don’t know what’s going to happen six months from now. It’s very hard to predict because, you know, the body has so much wear and tear on it that it’s difficult. And he’s had some troubles with that physically, I think, the last sort of 18 months or so. And yeah, I hope he can stay fit and healthy and finish his career the way that he wants to.”
Tennis players who have won multiple Olympic gold medals in the Open Era
While Murray is the only player who has won back-to-back Olympic gold medals, there are multiple tennis golds in the Open Era.
Leading this list are Serena and Venus Williams, who have both won four gold medals, one in singles and three in doubles together.
Six players have won two Olympic gold medals including Rafael Nadal, who has won both the singles and doubles titles in his career.
| Tennis players with multiple Olympic gold medals (Open Era) | Singles | Doubles | Overall |
| Venus Williams | 1 | 3 | 4 |
| Serena Williams | 1 | 3 | 4 |
| Andy Murray | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Rafael Nadal | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Katerina Siniakova | 0 | 2 (1 women’s, 1 mixed) | 2 |
| Gigi Fernandez | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| Mary Joe Fernandez | 0 | 2 | 2 |
| Nicolas Massu | 1 | 1 | 2 |
There are still two years to go until the next Olympic Games, which could see Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner attempt to win gold medals for the first time.
However, there also could be a reduced field in LA, as the tennis events begin just three days after Wimbledon.
