Andy Roddick has shared his disgust at the abuse Coco Gauff received after an incident at the China Open.
Gauff called for a video review after Sun Xinran hit a winner during the first set of their match in Beijing, arguing that the flashing LED screens around the court were distracting her. The point was replayed, with the American winning it before going on to win the match. ATP ace Alexander Zverev had the same issue during his match against Novak Djokovic at the China Open.
But WTA superstar Gauff said she suffered racist abuse following the victory, which former ATP number one Roddick has now discussed. His blunt verdict comes shortly after Gauff was defended by Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert following the abuse she received.
Andy Roddick issues powerful statement after Coco Gauff abuse
Speaking on his Served podcast, tennis legend Roddick said: “Just because you are typing it does not mean you are not saying it. If you are saying to someone disgustingly racist filth or you’re wishing a death-causing disease on someone for a tennis match, I hope nothing good ever happens to you.
“There are so many layers to this, but Coco is one of the most high-character people you will ever be around. She will step up to responsibility. She was not wrong. She did not cheat, she did nothing wrong. Was the timing rough, as they are in tennis matches? Yes. Had we seen it the previous week with Zverev and Djokovic? Yes. She was not wrong. She had a question. She is not someone who ever, ever, ever takes liberties with the rules. This is disgusting and has to stop.”
Who is your favorite player on the WTA Tour right now?
It really was a hugely disappointing and shameful situation involving Gauff, who lost to Elise Mertens shortly after. Since then, Gauff has withdrawn from the Wuhan Open, clearly not feeling 100% to play at the tournament. But that should help her recover in time for the WTA Finals this time next month, which she is expected to play.
Meanwhile, any abuse of the American is clearly unjustified and unwanted, with Gauff highly regarded within the tennis community. And it is clear to see why, with the WTA icon always speaking out on any issues within the sport, as well as making time for the fans every chance she gets. Moreover, she gives everything she has on the court, and at just 22 years old constantly puts many of her elders to shame with her admirable attitude.
