Arthur Fils has endured some rotten luck with injuries over the past few years, but 2026 has felt different.
Although it has not been completely devoid of fitness issues, they have been infrequent enough to allow him to build up consistency and form.
As such, this must surely be considered the greatest campaign of his young career to date, despite his underperformance at the Grand Slam level. After all, it will be remembered as the one where he claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title in Cincinnati.
As we near the final tournament of this stature before the season concludes, Arthur Fils frustratingly faces yet another race against time to be fit.
Injuries forced him to miss his homecoming at Roland Garros earlier this year, and the Paris Masters late last year. He will be desperate to ensure the latter does not happen again.
Arthur Fils delivers crucial fitness update ahead of the Paris Masters
However, it is certainly not looking good for the Frenchman.
After all, having dug deep to reach the Basel Open quarter-finals, his match with Taylor Fritz was marred by fitness concerns.

In the end, having lost the first set and fallen down a break in the second, Fils decided he could no longer continue.
Speaking afterwards, in comments compiled by French outlet L’Equipe, he revealed: “I felt a little pain in my leg. I’m going back to Paris to get some tests done, talk with my team, we’ll see based on the tests what we’re going to do for the rest of the season.”
Asked what this meant for his upcoming Paris Masters campaign, and if he felt confident of playing, Fils added: “Yes, I feel confident. I’m going to see what it looks like with the team, but I feel confident.”
Fils has all but qualified for the ATP Finals, and so will also be desperate to ensure he is fit enough to compete in that prestigious event for the very first time.
Naomi Cavaday’s reaction after Arthur Fils’ ‘heartbreaking’ retirement
Speaking on Tennis TV, whilst commentating on the match, Naomi Cavaday expressed her sympathy for Fils, who has had a torrid time with injuries in recent years.
She admitted: “It’s such a shame; it’s been a spectacular 2026 for Arthur Fils.”
“That means he just cannot compete. Miles away from feeling good enough here, and with Taylor Fritz at the other end of the court, [he] just had absolutely no chance.”
Cavaday, like the rest of the tennis world, wished him the best.
She added: “Well, we just hope that it is not a long-term injury, and that it’ll just be a few days… he can get himself back in action. Maybe back for Paris, but definitely back for Turin if he does confirm his spot there.

“It’s always really tough. Of course, six months out with the initial back stress fracture, you’ve gotta feel like it’s sensible that he doesn’t put it through anything unnecessary.”
This came after Former ATP Tour player Gilles Muller noted: It’s a bit heartbreaking. We saw yesterday [Flavio] Cobolli [retiring] in Vienna, and now today Fils here in Basel.
“Just got to hope it’s nothing serious. I think he made the right choice not to force it too much.”
