Not even a full day into the 2026 Australian Short Course Championships, we have already seen a national record fall: Ben Armbruster took down both the Australian and Allcomers record in a blistering 22.00 in the men’s 50 butterfly.

That time lowers the Australian Record that was previously held by legendary sprinter Kyle Chalmers back in 2021 at the World Cup in 22.24.

Armbruster now becomes the fastest ever performer on Australian soil, taking down Matt Jaukovic‘s mark of 22.28 (which also stood as the Australian record for more than a decade before it fell to Chalmers), having remained untouched since 2009.

Despite this being a national record, the time still sits more seven spots outside of the top 10 all-time performers list, with this putting him at 17th, ahead of Michele Busa (22.01), and behind Tom Shields and Marius Kusch who are tied at 15th in 21.99.

The video board in the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Center showed up as the number 22, leaving Armbruster a bit puzzled at the end of his race, then came the realization that the board does not show the tenths or hundredths of a second if a time hits a double zero, to which his demeanor switched to excitement.

Armbruster will race the finals of the 50 fly at 6 pm local time (4 am ET).
