Canelo-vs-Mbilli99.jpg

Canelo Alvarez’s eagerness to embrace Christian Mbilli’s volume resembles a fighter attempting to project calm ahead of their October 31 date. Publicly, he invites the relentless incoming salvos, yet his drastic camp overhaul tells the story of an aging champion bracing for an exhausting ordeal.

“Styles is perfect to make a great fight,” Canelo told Mike Coppinger about the matchup. “I love the idea he comes and put the pressure and I’m going to be there. No, I hope not,” said Canelo when asked if Mbilli will take one punch and run around like Edgar Berlanga and William Scull did against him.

“I think he don’t have the style to do that. So, he’s going to come, throw a lot of punches and do his best.”

Canelo deserves full credit for taking this fight. He could have opted for a softer touch, but he signed up to face an opponent capable of making him work every single minute. Even if outward bravado is masking deep internal concern, he is stepping directly into the line of fire rather than running away from it.

That bravery, however, cannot manufacture the youth or stamina required once Mbilli shifts into high gear. Canelo’s lack of self-awareness will not spare him from the physical toll once that opening bell rings on October 31. Mbilli is built to break an engine that is already running on empty.

Suffering a one-sided defeat in Riyadh would strike a fatal blow to Canelo’s standing at the elite level. It would demonstrate that his gas tank can no longer support him against the premier engines in the sport.  The optical disaster for Canelo in Riyadh would be immense. Getting thoroughly outworked, backed up against the ropes, and battered while tucked behind his gloves would look dreadful to the judges and the ringside brass.

Mbilli would not even need a clean one-punch knockout. The referee stepping in to rescue a defenseless, exhausted Canelo, or Eddy Reynoso waving the towel from the corner between the ninth and tenth rounds, would be the ultimate humiliation. It would signal the definitive close of the Canelo era, exposed by the very pressure fighter he claimed to want.
