Carl Froch picks a winner in prime Roy Jones Jr vs Andre Ward: “He gets the job done”

Roy Jones Jr is deemed by many to have been unbeatable when at his best, but three-time super-middleweight world champion, Carl Froch, has now offered his thoughts on whether ‘Captain Hook’ could have done what he couldn’t and defeat Andre Ward.

Froch suffered two losses during his iconic career, first losing out to Mikkel Kessler on away soil in Denmark back in 2010 – a defeat he would go on to avenge three years later – and then to Ward the following year in a super-middleweight title unification.

Ward would go on to fight at 168lbs on just two more occasions before moving up to light-heavyweight and eventually dethroning Sergey Kovalev to become a two-division world champion, then shockingly retiring at the age of just 33 years old with his undefeated record intact.

Meanwhile, Jones captured world honours in four weight divisions and is the only fighter post-19th century fighter to have won a world title at both middleweight and heavyweight, with his singular defeat in his first 50 professional contests coming by disqualification.

Speaking on his ‘Froch on Fighting’ channel, ‘The Cobra’ said that Jones would have been able to put an end to Ward’s unbeaten streak, despite his foe’s best attempts to ‘make it messy’.

“Roy Jones Jr. [wins]. Ward makes it messy and tries to p**s around in there but Roy Jones gets the job done.”

After years of back and forth, Froch and Ward recently buried the hatchet, 15 years after their encounter, with Ward admitting that the Nottingham fan-favourite hurt him in their fight.
