CM Punk has addressed defeating Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship in Zayn’s first defense of the gold.
Replacing Cody Rhodes following a backstage attack, CM Punk challenged for Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship on the July 6 Raw episode.
Punk was ultimately victorious, taking the title from the champion who had only won the gold at Night of Champions on June 27.
In an interview with ESPN New York – recorded ahead of the July 17 SmackDown episode – CM Punk was asked about ending Sami Zayn’s first WWE world title reign after just nine days.
Believing he has nothing to apologise for, the current titleholder said:
“I understand how Sami feels, but I don’t have anything to apologise for. The fantastic thing about sports in general is people have their favorites, and they will root for them, and they live and die by that.
“When your team stinks and you’re still pulling for them and you still have that hope, I know what it feels like, I’m a Chicago Cubs fan.
“I don’t have anything to apologise to Sami about. If he wants a title shot, he can come get one. I’ll gladly give him a rematch.”

Punk may have to put his money where his mouth is, with it later being announced on SmackDown that if Sami Zayn and GUNTHER defeat Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event, they will be added to the Undisputed WWE Championship match slated for SummerSlam.
With Punk previously accepting Rhodes’ challenge, a Zayn and GUNTHER win on July 18 would result in Punk defending the gold against Rhodes, Zayn and GUNTHER in a four-way at SummerSlam.
While fans have been waiting for a Punk vs Rhodes singles showdown since it was first teased in late-2023, this bout becoming a four-way would give more stars the spotlight heading into the biggest party of the summer.
