Colts RB Taylor signs $44m contract extension

Jonathan Taylor has signed a two-year, $44 million contract extension with the Indianapolis Colts, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid running backs.

According to reports deal is worth up to $47 million and includes $39 million in guaranteed money, the third-largest contract ever handed to a running back.

The extension keeps Taylor under contract with the Colts through the 2028 season.

The agreement comes just two days after Atlanta Falcons star Bijan Robinson signed a record-breaking extension, continuing a resurgence in the running back market. Detroit Lions star Jahmyr Gibbs is also seeking a new contract.

Taylor admitted earlier this week that Robinson’s deal could help move negotiations forward.

“Hopefully,” he said. “I’ve got to go talk to my agent. I need to go talk to him and see where things are at.

“I’ve been trying to just focus on getting better, but I have faith. I’m going to tap in and check in with him now that you guys broke the news to me.”

Another big running back deal: three-time Pro-Bowl RB Jonathan Taylor and the Colts reached agreement today on a two-year, $44 million extension worth up to $47 million that includes $39 million guaranteed, per @rapsheet and me.

Taylor ready to push on in 2026

The 27-year-old was entering the final season of the three-year extension he signed in 2023 after a lengthy contract dispute with Indianapolis.

After injury-hit campaigns in 2022 and 2023, Taylor has returned to his best over the past two seasons.

He led the NFL with 323 rushing attempts and 18 rushing touchdowns last season, finishing with 1,585 rushing yards. Taylor also recorded career highs through the air, catching 46 passes for 378 receiving yards.

Only Baltimore Ravens star Derrick Henry has recorded more rushing yards and scrimmage touchdowns than Taylor since the Colts selected him in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Taylor is already the second-leading rusher in Colts franchise history with 7,598 yards, trailing only Hall of Famer Edgerrin James.
