Devin Haney needs to give DAZN more than victories if he wants the broadcaster to celebrate its investment. The WBO welterweight champion must produce performances that leave viewers wanting to watch his next fight.

Haney confirmed his partnership with DAZN on social media, promising big fights and plans to promote other fighters through Devin Haney Promotions.

That sounds good on announcement day. Delivering entertainment once the bell rings is the harder part.

Haney beat Jose Ramirez and Brian Norman Jr., but neither performance offered much encouragement for fans who find his approach difficult to watch. The holding, jabbing and movement helped him win. They also left long stretches without the sustained offense that could make casual viewers eager to return.

DAZN can advertise his unbeaten record, his championships across three divisions and his pursuit of more belts. Those selling points only go so far if viewers remember spending the evening waiting for the action to improve.

A proposed unification against IBF champion Liam Paro would give Haney another opportunity to add to his collection. It would also test whether he can take the initiative rather than settle for controlling distance and limiting his opponent’s chances.

Nobody should expect Haney to abandon his defensive skills. However, there is room between reckless fighting and doing just enough to protect a lead. He can throw combinations, follow up when he lands, and reduce the grabbing that interrupts the action.

Another belt would give DAZN something to put on a poster. An entertaining performance would give viewers a reason to buy into the next event.

Haney’s promotional ambitions add another promise to fulfill. Signing fighters and securing dates for them would give his company substance beyond his own career.

For now, his biggest contribution remains what he delivers inside the ring. If the performances continue to leave fans cold, DAZN could find itself working harder to sell each appearance despite the growing title collection.
