Stan Wawrinka will never win another professional tennis match after his career came to an end at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Wawrinka was beaten by Jiri Lehecka in the first round of his final ever tournament, bringing an end to his 24-year career as a professional tennis player.
The Swiss ended his career with 590 ATP Tour wins, with Wawrinka winning three Grand Slam titles, one Masters 1000 tournament and an Olympic gold medal in doubles.
Wawrinka did not achieve so much success in 2026, but the 41-year-old was still able to beat 10 players this year.
What is your best memory of Stan Wawrinka?
Stan Wawrinka won 10 of his 32 matches in 2026
Wawrinka announced that he was retiring at the end of the 2026 season before the year even started, and he made a positive start to the season in Australia.
This included Wawrinka winning his first match of the 2026 season at the United Cup, as he beat then top 30 player and 2025 Shanghai Masters finalist Arthur Rinderknech.
Wawrinka won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014, and he had a positive farewell in Melbourne. The former world number three reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2020 after two dramatic wins against Laslo Djere and Arthur Gea.
The win against Gea was the last time Wawrinka won a Grand Slam match, having lost in the first round of Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open.
Wawrinka’s wins were more fleeting after the Australian Open, as he was unable to win back-to-back matches at any tournament. The last win of Wawrinka’s career came at the ATP 250 tournament in Lyon, as Wawrinka beat Martin Landaluce, who is 21 years his junior, in three sets.
This win was significant, as it made Wawrinka one of the oldest players to win an ATP match in history.
