It’s another Australian record broken in Sydney, this time in the men’s 100 breast, as Joshua Collett narrowly snagged the win, and did-so in triple record-setting fashion, setting a new Australian, All Comers, and Oceanian record of 56.61.
This swim marked his first ever swim under 57-seconds, and just snuck him past Joshua Yong for the gold and was one one-hundredth of a second quicker than his Australian and Oceanic Records of 56.62 from 2024.
Collet split 11.88/14.53/14.75/15.45 to get is hands on the wall first, Collett was first to the 50 in 26.41, seven hundredths ahead of 3rd place finisher Gideon Burnes, who swam an All Comers Record in the prelims in 56.75 (another record that Collett’s time surpassed). Collette managed to hold off a fury of a final 50 from Yong to take the win.
Entering the finals, Collett sat 2nd behind Burnes in 56,82, having nearly broken the All Comers Record in the heat before Burnes in the prelims.
Australia has been desperately looking for a strong breaststroker to help get their medley relays to that next level, between the trio of Collett, Yong, and Burnes, the options are plentiful.
