Junior Nationals finalist Dmitriy Oranskiy has announced his verbal commitment to swim for the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill beginning in the fall of 2027.
“I’m incredibly excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina. None of this would have been possible without God, who has guided me through every step of this journey. Thank you to my parents, family, friends, and teammates for believing in me and supporting me every step of the way. A special thanks to Coach Steve, Coach Joe, and Coach Stephanie for believing in me, challenging me every day, and helping me grow both in and out of the pool. Thank you to Coach Mark and Coach Andrew for believing in me and welcoming me into the Tarheel family. I’m honored for the opportunity and can’t wait to represent UNC. Go Heels!! ”
A senior at De La Salle High School in California, Oranskiy has been a member of his school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his freshman year. He also currently trains year-round with the Pleasanton Seahawks, where he primarily specializes in freestyle.
Oranskiy turned in a series of top performances at the Winter Junior Championships – West in December, logging five personal best times. He contested the 100 free (46.35), 200 free (1:39.02), 500 free (4:28.66) and 1650 free (15:47.07), posting a lifetime best in all but the 1650. He also set a new personal best time in both the 50 back (24.24) and 100 back (51.05) as the leadoff on the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay, respectively.
A week later, Oranskiy lowered his top times even further at the Walnut Sectionals. He placed 11th in the 500 free (4:28.28 – PB), 19th in the 1000 free (9:33.76) and 200 free (1:39.71) and 20th in the 100 free (45.81 – PB). He also contested the 100 back (52.34) and 100 fly (52.33 – PB).
At the 2026 Junior National Championships (LCM) in August, Oranskiy turned in a series of fast performances, clocking a lifetime best time in five events and earning a second swim in one event. He placed 19th in the 200 free (1:51.92 – PB) and finished 33rd in the 800 free (8:26.74), 39th in the 400 free (4:01.53 – PB) and 68th in the 100 free (51.99 – PB). Oranskiy also once again set personal best times in the 50 back (27.83) and 100 back (59.49) as the leadoff on the 200 medley and 400 medley relays.
Best Times SCY
- 100 free – 45.35
- 200 free – 1:37.70
- 500 free – 4:28.28
- 1000 free – 9:19.05

A Division I program, UNC competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference and placed 8th out of 15 teams at last season’s conference championships. The Tarheels sent five athletes on to compete at the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Championship, where they took 19th overall. To earn a second swim at the 2026 ACC Championships, it took times of 42.67/1:34.69/4:20.07 in the 100/200/500 free, putting him outside the cutoff in each of his top events.
On the team itself, Oranskiy would have ranked 3rd in the 1650 free, 4th in the 1000 free, 5th in the 500 free, 9th in the 200 free and 10th in the 100 free this past season. With another full season to go before he joins the Tarheels, it remains to be seen exactly where Oranskiy will fall on the roster.
Currently set to join Oranskiy in UNC’s class of 2031 are Jack Martin, Issac Adanin and Hampton Stuecker, who should all make for strong training partners over their four years together.
