WWE
With the WWE tag team division across Raw and SmackDown in a pretty sorry state, the company should look to shake-up their approach to two-on-two action.
While it would also require much more creative investment from the decision makers in the writers room, one way to inject some excitement would be to introduce some new team to the fold across both shows.
Unlike Raw, SmackDown does at least have champions in The MFTs who have defended their titles since winning them, so it would likely be a better environment for newly formed teams to get an opportunity.
Here are some new SmackDown stars to potentially win the WWE Tag Team Championships:
DarkState
DarkState kicked Saquon Shugars from their group on the May 19, 2026 episode of NXT.
Of WWE’s three brands NXT is certainly doing tag team wrestling the best right now with the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
Teams from all brands are putting on showcases each week, but one of the bigger names crashed out early when former two-time WWE NXT Tag Team Champions DarkState lost to fellow former two-time champs Fraxiom.
Given this loss and the fact that they’ve already reached the top of NXT’s tag ranks twice, it may be time for WWE to move DarkState up to the main roster.
Along with the group’s leader Dion Lennox – who could enter singles competition – Cutler James and Osiris Griffin would make for a great addition to the blue brand and could even step up to challenge The MFTs or even Bakusai if they manage to dethrone The MFTs for the WWE Tag Team Titles in the coming weeks.
Lucha Brothers (Penta & Rey Fenix)
The Lucha Brothers reunited at WWE AAA Worlds Collide in Chicago, defeating Los Perros Del Mal by DQ.
This past Friday’s WWE SmackDown saw Penta get in the face of Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn, teasing that he could cash-in Money in the Bank on him should he claim the briefcase in New Orleans on Saturday (October 10).
With Roman Reigns appearing unlikely to lose his title before WrestleMania 43, this may be Penta’s best course of action with his guaranteed world title contract.
That doesn’t mean Penta would need to rush things however; the SmackDown main event scene is jam packed with talent right now so the former Intercontinental Champion may be better going on a side quest for a spell until the perfect opportunity to cash-in arises.
One such side quest he could embark on is the WWE Tag Team Championships, as Penta moving to SmackDown would put him on the same brand as his brother Rey Fenix. While he is also busy with his singles career, fans are eager to see the Lucha Brothers reunite for a sustained run, and now may be a good opportunity.
The Skyscrapers (Baron Corbin & Donovan Dijak)
During his time away from WWE, Baron Corbin rebranded himself as Bishop Dyer and held the MLW World Tag Team Titles with Donovan Dijak as The Skyscrapers for 261 days
With Baron Corbin now without clear direction after losing the WWE United States Title to Trick Williams, it may be time for “The Nomad” to reunite with an old friend.
Having previously held the MLW World Tag Team Titles for the better part of a year, WWE could look to re-sign Donovan Dijak and reform The Skyscrapers, only this time under the WWE umbrella.
Dijak never really got a fair shot at success on the main roster before his Summer 2024 WWE release, and with the company in need of tag teams The Skyscrapers is a no brainer of an addition to SmackDown.
