Pro’s emotional, card-saving back-nine was about more than golf | News
All Sean Crocker could do was stare into the distance as he tried to keep his emotions in check at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club. The final round of the DP World Tour’s Genesis Championship, the tour’s regular-season finale, was supposed to be about whether or not Si Woo Kim could win the day and triumph on home soil.
While Japan’s Yuta Katsurgawa lifted the trophy on Sunday in South Korea, it was Crocker’s final nine that stole the show.
The 30-year-old American entered this week’s event ranked 103rd in the Race to Dubai standings, meaning he needed a good week to jump inside the top 100 and keep his full-time playing privileges. Crocker opened the tournament with rounds of 72 and 71 and needed to convert a pressure-packed two-putt for par on Friday’s final hole to make the cut.
That put him at 101, and a Saturday 69 moved Crocker into position as the bubble boy at 100. He needed a steady Sunday round to avoid an uncomfortable trip to Q School and the uncertainty that awaits those outside the top 100.
But with his goal within his grasp, Crocker stumbled out of the gates early. He bogeyed the fourth, seventh and ninth to turn in 3-over 39 and drop off the bubble. With his job status fading away and worries about his family’s financial security creeping into his mind, Sean Crocker played what might be the most important nine holes of his golfing career. He birdied 10 and 11 to steady the ship. Then he made circles at 15, 16 and 17 to get back to the final spot in the rankings as he stood on the 18th tee box. His drive on the par-5 found the fairway, and his approach came up short and right of the fringe. If he could get up-and-down for birdie from 30 yards, he would make his fourth straight birdie and all but guarantee full-time status for 2027.
Crocker clipped his chip nicely; it landed on the green, took the slope down to the hole and settled to tap-in range.
Fighting back the emotions of a grueling final round, Crocker tapped in for a closing birdie and a round of 68, which was good enough to finish at 100. As Crocker waited to see if his emotional back-nine charge was good enough, he talked about a trying day that had him contemplating what the future held. He said he thought about his wife, Isabella, and his newborn son, Cruz, and how he wanted to keep financially supporting their life with golf. But he also thought about the path outside of the top 100 and how he didn’t want to go to Q School and spend more time away from them than he already did. What the closing flurry hopefully meant was that Sean Crocker got to go home and be a husband and father, one who could leave his worries at the door for another year.
“It’s not easy being a Tour player, being away from my family, especially when you’re on the bubble. Obviously I’m not the only person but the last thing you want to do is start a little family and then get demoted or lose some of your playing rights.

“I’m not going to Q-School! If I’m being dead serious,” Crocker said when asked what he was thinking about as he made the turn. “I don’t really know how the new categories are working and stuff like that, but that’s 12 weeks on the trot. I haven’t seen my wife and child for a handful of weeks now. I knew it would be a week off and then Q-School if that was the choice I made. I just really wanted to give it every chance I could to be able to spend a little time at home to be a dad and a husband, because it’s been a while and I miss the living hell out of them.”
Then Crocker opened up about the trials and tribulations of being a grinder on the DP World Tour and how the pressure can mount as you play not only to keep your dream alive but to make sure you do right by those you love and want to take care of.
“It’s not easy being a Tour player, being away from your family, especially when you are on the bubble and obviously I’m not the only person, but the last thing you want to do is start a little family and get demoted or lose some of your playing rights, so I was obviously thinking about [Cruz’s] future and making sure my wife never has to have a job,” Crocker said. “It was definitely on the back of my mind that I also have [caddie Stevie Pettit] to take care of. There’s lots of things that weigh on our shoulders when we are out there playing golf, and I was just trying my ass off to get it in.”
When his round finished, Sean Crocker needed to dodge just one final bullet. As long as non-member Sanghun Shin didn’t win the tournament, Crocker had done his job. As Shin was in the process of finishing three shots behind winner Katsurgawa, Crocker signed his card and took a call from Isabella.
“I’m doing whatever I can to not break out in tears,” Crocker said.
He would’ve been forgiven if he didn’t hold it in check. But an hour later, his fate was sealed. Katsugawa held off Shin and the other contenders to claim the trophy and his own spot in the top 100.
When the pressure-packed Sunday ended, Katsugawa was the one celebrating an unlikely DP World Tour win. But Sunday belonged to Sean Crocker and a card-saving back nine that was about more than golf.
