Robert Garcia Ready To Pursue Shakur Stevenson Mandatory Position For Raymond Muratalla

Raymond Muratalla’s camp reacted immediately after WBO president Gustavo Olivieri identified the IBF lightweight champion as a leading candidate for Shakur Stevenson’s mandatory challenger position at light welterweight.

Olivieri explained on Monday that the sanctioning body has yet to name an opponent for Stevenson’s proposed November defense. Emiliano Vargas holds the No. 1 ranking at light welterweight, but Muratalla becomes eligible by changing divisions and submitting an official petition.

“We’ll get on it asap. See you soon @ShakurStevenson @WorldBoxingOrg @OlivieriLaw,” said Robert Garcia on X.

Roberts’ post echoed comments he made before Muratalla’s victory over Robson Conceicao last Saturday night, when he revealed Shakur had already expressed interest in the fight. He also said Muratalla could stay at 135 pounds to pursue unification bouts or push for a second world title at light welterweight.

The organization faces a choice. Vargas lacks top-tier experience despite his ranking, while Muratalla already owns a world title. That difference could prove pivotal when officials assign the mandatory challenger.

Any official ruling still might not guarantee Stevenson’s direction. The champion spent Tuesday exchanging messages with Bill Haney about a potential clash with Devin Haney. Selecting that route would require his team to handle the mandatory obligation first.

No timeline has been announced for a final decision. Until then, Muratalla remains in waiting despite Robert’s public interest in securing the opportunity. The WBO’s ruling will help determine his next move as he weighs a jump to light welterweight.
