Roberto De Zerbi insistent on Tottenham signing Cody Gakpo

Cody Gakpo
According to The Independent, Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi is insistent on the signing of Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo before the transfer window closes next week.

Spurs had a woeful start to the Premier League campaign with a 3-0 loss to Brentford on the road. The north London giants have since acted with the signings of Savio as well as Omar Marmoush from Manchester City.

The duo are set to provide much-needed upgrade in the final third, but De Zerbi is insistent on Spurs pursuing a deal for Gakpo despite the spending spree, which has already exceeded beyond £300 million this summer.

Liverpool are close to landing the signature of Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola after a lengthy pursuit, while they have not given up on Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr despite a £50 million offer being turned down.

The Reds are also aiming for a third attacking signing, and The Independent claim that Gakpo could yet leave the Merseyside outfit.

New attack

Tottenham have finished 17th in each of the previous two league campaigns, but there is plenty of optimism that they could be challenging at the top end of the table with the investment made this summer.

Savio had a bright debut from the right wing with a goal and an assist in the 5-1 over Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup 2nd round and he looks poised to make his maiden club league appearance against Newcastle United at home on Saturday.

Marmoush has been a regular in pre-season with the Cityzens too and should be ready to lead the line. De Zerbi would ideally want an upgrade on the left wing as well with Mathys Tel having not done enough to earn the position outright.

Gakpo would be a quality addition for the department. He made 15 goal contributions for the Reds last term with 12 of those in the league. The Netherlands ace is pretty versatile as he can play upfront aside from his preferred left wing position.

The former PSV man was signed for an initial £37 million in January 2023 by Liverpool. Based on the inflated transfer prices this summer, Spurs can expect to pay at least £60 million for his services if the Reds open the door for a late sale.

Spurs are not alone in the pursuit with Manchester City having recently joined the race. Tottenham could assure Gakpo with a guaranteed starting spot which Man City may not, but the Cityzens have the lure of Champions League football.
