Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez are targeting February 6 for their next fight, with negotiations continuing despite uncertainty over Lopez’s WBA title and Garcia’s pursuit of Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mike Coppinger reports that neither the WBA’s decision nor the possibility of a Mayweather fight is expected to interfere with those discussions. That puts Garcia–Lopez ahead of the Mayweather matchup, which has generated plenty of talk without producing an agreement.
“Would be surprised if Garcia-Teofimo didn’t take place next,” Coppinger wrote on X. “Feb. 6 is the targeted date right now as talks continue.”
The date is still a target. There is no confirmed fight announcement, but the report gives Garcia’s next move a clearer direction after his attorney and adviser, Guadalupe Valencia, promoted the financial potential of facing Mayweather.
Valencia’s comments left the timetable dependent on Mayweather becoming available. Coppinger’s reporting places that possibility further down the road, with Teofimo first.
A Garcia–Lopez fight would give Ryan an opponent whose threat comes from what he can do today. Mayweather’s name would sell the event, but Teofimo offers a competitive fight between two active stars with something to lose.
The WBA situation remains a separate question. Jack Catterall has been pursuing his ordered fight with Lopez, while Teofimo has sought permission to pursue Garcia instead. Coppinger’s report indicates negotiations can continue regardless of the ruling; it does not establish whether Lopez will retain his championship.
That affects how the fight can eventually be promoted. Garcia–Lopez has an appeal with or without two belts, but calling it a confirmed unification would be premature until Lopez’s title position is settled.
Garcia also has reason to keep his attention on the opponent closest to becoming a reality. Selling a Mayweather fight before reaching terms with Teofimo risks making the more competitive matchup sound like a preliminary step.
For now, February 6 is the date to watch. Mayweather remains a possible later payday, while Garcia and Lopez work toward the fight Coppinger expects to happen next.
