Climate change is no longer a prediction. It’s a reality. Part of the climate change debate revolves around increasing methane emissions, with the agricultural industry being focused on as the culprit. To address these concerns, the California Legislature recently passed Senate Bill 1383, which aims to reduce methane emissions from the agricultural industry, particularly dairy farms. This outlandish bill is the first in the country to attempt to regulate methane from dairy cows. Because there is so much uncertainty about the bill’s impact, this comment argues that the bill would hurt the dairy industry more than it would help combat climate change. The comments also suggest alternatives to regulating dairy methane emissions while allowing California’s dairy industry to continue.
