The greatest men’s and women’s Wimbledon and US Open players is certainly up for debate, with Patrick Mouratoglou now having his say on the matter.
Mouratoglou is a well-renowned tennis coach, most notably working with WTA legend Serena Williams. The American superstar claimed 10 Grand Slam titles during her time under Mouratoglou. He has also coached her fellow WTA icons Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep, but right now is working with Stefanos Tsitsipas on the ATP Tour.
Mouratoglou has now shared his verdict on the greatest ever male and female players to take on two of the four Grand Slam tournaments – Wimbledon and the US Open – and indeed those he thinks are currently at the top.
Who is the best women’s player in the world right now?
Pick one if you can…
Patrick Mouratoglou names the best ever Wimbledon and US Open players
Sharing a video on his Instagram, he started with the best player ever to play Wimbledon, saying: “[Roger] Federer, without any… ahh, there is a little battle between Federer and [Novak] Djokovic, but because of his style of game, Federer.”
Picking the best current men’s player, he said: “Today Jannik Sinner. I think he’s the most dominant on that surface in the past three years.”
Moving on to the greatest female player to ever take on Wimbledon, he commented: “It’s between [Martina] Navratilova and Serena. For the type of game, Navratilova. For the number of titles, Navratilova. For the fact that Serena played in a way stronger field, I would say Serena.”
And naming the best current female player on the iconic grass courts of the All England Club, he said: “Today? Nobody. Every year it’s a different winner. The best players in the world don’t perform at Wimbledon. I would say nobody and everybody.”
Mouratoglou then moved on to the men’s event at the US Open, saying of the best player ever: “Oh, Pete Sampras. He’s the youngest ever to have won the US Open. And what is amazing is that he stopped his career by winning the US Open at 32.”
He then named his best current male player: “Carlos Alcaraz. In the past years he is the most dominant.” And keeping it brief for his best ever and best current female players in New York, he picked Williams and Aryna Sabalenka respectively.
It’s certainly not a bad list of players compiled by the coach, with the iconic Federer having claimed eight titles at Wimbledon, more than any other man. Meanwhile, Sinner is rapidly climbing the list with two.
Navratilova leads the all-time women’s list with nine, while Williams is not far behind with seven. The latter has also claimed six US Open titles, with the former boasting four. And on the men’s side, Sampras emerged victorious five times in New York, while Alcaraz already has two titles to his name.
