Stan Wawrinka’s receives US Open wildcard boost after withdrawal
Despite competing in his final-ever year on the ATP Tour, Stan Wawrinka is surprisingly still yet to receive a wildcard from the US Open.
The Swiss star confirmed he would retire at the end of the 2026 season and he has received a slew of wildcards at major events as a result.
Wawrinka has appeared at all three Grand Slams so far this year, as well as the Italian Open, the Monte Carlo Masters, the Barcelona Open, and the Dubai Tennis Championships.
While Wawrinka is yet to receive a wildcard from the US Open, his chances of doing so have just been boosted after the latest string of withdrawals from the Flushing Meadows Grand Slam.
Ethan Quinn and Gabriel Diallo have withdrawn from the US Open this year, which has opened the door for Martin Damm Jr and Wu Yibing to enter the main draw.

Damm Jr had received a wildcard into the US Open this year, which he will no longer need, so it could free up a space for one of the veterans looking for instant access into the tournament.
Prior to Damm Jr’s entrance into the main draw, there was just one remaning wildcard left for the US Open, with Grigor Dimitrov and Wawrinka yet to be given one.
Now there is two, there is an even bigger chance that Wawrinka will be able to play his final-ever US Open tournament.
Both Dimitrov and Wawrinka were gifted wildcards for Wimbledon this year, but they had differing results at the grass court Grand Slam.
Wawrinka was beaten in the first round of the tournament to end his time at Wimbledon, although he was given a very difficult match against Matteo Berrettini.
Dimitrov, meanwhile, enjoyed a very productive time on the grass by reaching the fourth round of the Grand Slam.
The Bulgarian defeated Dane Sweeny, Jakub Mensik, and Berrettini at Wimbledon this year, before losing to wildcard Arthur Fery in the round of 16.
After the latest developments at the US Open, both Wawrinka and Dimitrov will very likely get another chance to prove they can still cut it at Grand Slam level.
This will, of course, be Wawrinka’s final-ever Grand Slam appearance, should he be given the wildcard, so it would be very surprising to see the three-time Grand Slam champion miss out.
Wawrinka won the US Open in 2016 to claim the third Grand Slam of his career and he beat the likes of Juan Martin del Potro, Kei Nishikori, and Novak Djokovic en route to the title.
