The Chinese Swimming Federation has revealed its hefty 49-strong lineup set to represent the nation at this year’s Short Course World Championships heading to Beijing next month.
23 women and 26 men have been named, following up on the country’s impressive hardware haul at this year’s Asian Games in Tokyo.
14-year-old Yu Zidi is among the women, with the versatile prodigy having won a trio of golds across the women’s 200m fly, 200m IM and 400m IM at the Games.
She’ll be joined by Olympic racing mainstays Zhang Yufei, Li Bingjie, Tang Qianting and Yu Yiting, among others.
Zhang bustsed out new national records in the SCM 50 free and 100 fly at last month’s Chinese Nationals, while Li posted a new national mark in the SCM 1500 free.
Prior to that, Yu wreaked havoc on the World Cup circuit where she established new national records in the 100m, 200m and 400m IM events.
On the men’s side, Zhang Zhanshuo will look to carry momentum from having reaped an unprecedented seven gold medals at the Asian Games.
While reigning World Record holder and Olympic champion Pan Zhanle and his veteran teammate and recent World Record setter Xu Jiayu have been listed on the roster, Olympian and world champion Qin Haiyang is missing from the lineup.
That means we’ll see a new men’s 50m and 100m breaststroke champion this time around, as Qin earned gold in both events at the 2024 Short Course World Championships.
There in Melbourne, China placed 4th in the overall swimming medal table, having amassed 5 medals including 3 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Tang represented the other individual gold medalist, having won the women’s 100m breaststroke event.
