The WTA Finals start in less than a month, and so competition for the final places is hotting up.

However, the actual eight main competitors have already been confirmed, following Iga Swiatek’s decision to end her season early.

It would have taken an almighty task to propel her into that final position anyway, and given her fitness concerns of late, it seemed almost impossible.

The Polish superstar’s choice was a wise one, and it cemented Karolina Muchova’s participation.

Which of these four WTA players will win the most Grand Slams next year?

Sabalenka, Gauff and Swiatek all went without a major title in 2026…

There are still two alternate spots up for grabs, and before yesterday, Alexandra Eala remained in contention for one of them.

Sadly, following her Round of 16 loss to Diana Shnaider in Ningbo, that dream is over.

Alex Eala out of WTA Finals contention with Ningbo loss

Interestingly, it felt like Swiatek ending her season actually provided Eala with this slim opportunity,  lessening the competition for the two coveted alternate spots.

However, her failure to capitalise was almost instant, with the 21-year-old beaten in a hard-fought clash with the left-handed Russian.

Belinda Bencic also lost, leaving both of them too far from the alternate positions.

Who can now qualify for the WTA Finals?

Marta Kostyuk currently holds the strongest position, as she is occupying the first alternate spot with 3921 points.

However, she did just retire injured from her latest match in Ningbo, casting doubt over whether she might play at the WTA Finals at all.

Iva Jovic is next up behind her, with her 2941 points outlining a considerable margin between the two.

Player Rank Points Can they qualify?
Iga Swiatek 9. 4189 No, injured
Marta Kostyuk 10. 3921 Yes
Iva Jovic 11. 2941 Yes
Maja Chwalinska 12. 2755 No, can’t qualify
Diana Shnaider 13. 2661 Yes
Elise Mertens 14. 2540 Yes

She is closely followed by Shnaider and Elise Mertens.

Interestingly, Jovic actually plays Shnaider next in the Ningbo Open quarter-finals. The result of this match could have huge ramifications on this race.

Maja Chwalinska would also have been involved in this fierce competition, but she actually cannot be an alternate as she didn’t play the required eight events between WTA 1000 and 500s.
