Rafael Jodar will play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the 2026 Shanghai Masters final.

It will be the first all-Spanish Masters 1000 final in nine years. Jodar and Davidovich Fokina will follow in the footsteps of Rafael Nadal and Albert Ramos-Vinolas, who met in the 2017 Monte Carlo Masters final.

But who emerged victorious nine years ago in Monte Carlo? Here is a look back at what happened when Nadal and Ramos-Vinolas did battle in the principality.

Rafael Nadal won the last all-Spanish Masters 1000 final

Nine years ago, Nadal arrived in Monte Carlo looking to win a record-extending 10th title at the event. Returning to the final, the Spanish icon defeated Kyle Edmund, Alexander Zverev, Diego Schwartzman, and David Goffin.

Standing on the opposite side of the net from him was another Spaniard, Ramos-Vinolas. Making his Masters 1000 final debut, Ramos-Vinolas defeated Renzo Olivo, Carlos Berlocq, Andy Murray, Marin Cilic, and Lucas Pouille.

And tell us why…

Ramos-Vinolas impressed on his way to the final, but still walked onto the court a major underdog against Nadal. If he was going to win the Monte Carlo Masters, he was going to need to do something very special.

Nadal was in no mood to let that happen, though, and dropped just four games in a dominant 6-1, 6-3 win over his countryman. Nadal didn’t face a single break point as he won his 10th Monte Carlo Masters title.

Ramos-Vinolas was full of praise for Nadal after the match, rating his level during his post-match press conference.

“I think that he was a little bit better in everything. When he’s a little bit better in everything, the difference after it’s what we saw in the match. I think also I didn’t serve good. To be honest, I think he served really good today. Last time I played against him, I felt that on the return it was my chance to put some pressure. But today I felt that he was serving so good,” he said.

“I think he’s playing really good. Not his best tennis, but he’s probably at a good level. He beat some players easily, not just in the final. It means that he’s playing good.”

“I am satisfied with the way that I am playing. Is obvious that there are always things to improve. But being honest today, my serve worked great. Backhand, have been hitting very well the backhand during the whole week. The forehand better and better every day. So I should be happy about everything,” said Nadal when he was told about Ramos-Vinolas’ comments during his press conference.

It’s always the motivation to play better and better. But I think we are in a very good way to keep winning matches. That’s the most important thing for me.”
