Iga Swiatek is now in control of her own qualification fate for the WTA Finals this year.

Swiatek has had a relatively disappointing 2026 season, particularly at the Grand Slam tournaments where she reached just one quarter-final and failed to win a major title for the first year since 2021.

However, there have still been some positive signs, with Swiatek winning the Canadian Open title back in August, keeping her hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals.

With Swiatek at risk of not qualifying for the WTA Finals for the first time in six years, she now knows exactly what she needs to do after being handed a boost at the Wuhan Open.

Which of these four WTA players will win the most Grand Slams next year?

Sabalenka, Gauff and Swiatek all went without a major title in 2026…

Iga Swiatek will be in pole position to qualify for the WTA Finals if she wins the Wuhan Open

Swiatek won her latest match at the Wuhan Open against Ashlyn Krueger, who she beat 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 tournament.

This is a tournament where the big names have been depleted by both injuries and surprise results, including top seed Aryna Sabalenka losing to Ann Li in her only match at this year’s Wuhan Open.

Sabalenka has already qualified for the WTA Finals this year, alongside Elena Rybakina, Mirra Andreeva, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff and Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, who has qualified as a result of winning a major title this year.

This means that there are only two spots left for currently ninth-placed Swiatek to try and muscle her way into this year’s WTA Finals, with Elina Svitolina and Karolina Muchova both ahead of her. Svitolina is out of reach for Swiatek to catch at the Wuhan Open, but she can now catch Muchova.

Muchova was beaten in the third round of the Wuhan Open by Diana Shnaider, and is therefore no longer in control of her own qualification fate for the WTA Finals.

Swiatek now knows that if she wins the Wuhan Open title for the first time, then she will overtake Muchova in the race to the WTA Finals. This does not mean that Swiatek will have officially qualified, with tournaments still to play before the WTA Finals, but it means she will be in control of her own destiny.

The only higher-ranked player remaining in the Wuhan Open draw than Swiatek is fifth seed Svitolina, who she could face in the semi-finals. However, first Swiatek will take on either the aforementioned Li or Indonesian Janice Tjen.
