Andrew Novak’s Mexico Open win gave him a priceless gift: ‘Changes things for me’ | News

Andrew Novak was honest in the hours after the moment he’d waited his whole life for.

“I probably won’t do that again in my PGA Tour career,” Novak said on Sunday night at Vidanta Vallarta.

“That” was shooting 19 under over two rounds, with a bogey on a par-5. That came during the middle two rounds at the VidantaWorld Mexico Open, as Novak built a six-shot lead heading into Sunday’s final round in search of the first solo PGA Tour win of his career. Many thought that win was coming last year, when Novak won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Ben Griffin, lost in a playoff to Justin Thomas at the RBC Heritage and put himself in the Ryder Cup conversation after making it all the way to the Tour Championship. He was seemingly building to a breakthrough, but 2026 delivered different results. Despite his ball-striking numbers improving this season, Novak struggled with the putter and missed the FedEx Cup Playoffs. However, as his poor results piled up near the end of the season, Novak made a change. In August, he pulled an old T.P. Mills model that had worked well for him previously out of his closet, hoping his play on the greens would improve.

The putter change worked. Novak went T7-T44-T17 in his first three starts with his “rusted” flat-stick and then turned it loose this week in Mexico, where he rolled in everything he looked at. Novak picked up over eight shots on the greens and over five on approach. That combination built an insurmountable lead on Sunday, as he carded a final-round two-under 69 to post 25 under and win by five shots over Steven Fisk and Kristoffer Ventura.

“Just kind of in the zone,” Novak said of his blistering second and third rounds that allowed him to run away from the field. “It’s one of those times where golf just kind of relents and gives you some success. I made everything. I hit it great.”

Novak’s Mexico win was a moment that he had spent his entire career building toward. But as he sat next to the trophy, finally a solo PGA Tour champion, Novak could only look to the future and the priceless gift a one-in-a-lifetime week in Mexico had given him.

“I think the confidence is there. Like I felt like this is a good way to prove my confidence to myself. Yes, I should be confident,” Novak said when asked if the win makes him feel differently about his game and prospects against the world’s best. “But I think the biggest thing for this is it’s going to give me opportunity. I was obviously trying to stay in the moment, but it’s hard not to think about what this could mean for 2028 with things changing with the PGA Tour. Obviously, that could be massive for me. There are massive implications for my career with this win. Obviously, confidence coming from it is a part, but I think opportunity is now the biggest benefit.”

The PGA Tour is headed to a two-tier model in 2028 with the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The Championship Series will have 23-24 events, each with a purse of at least $20 million and fields of approximately 120 players with no alternate list and no sponsor exemptions. The Challenger Series will be made up of second-tier events with $4 million purses and players vying to play their way up into the Championship Series.

A win in the FedEx Cup Fall in 2026 comes with the usual list of winning perks (a two-year exemption and spots in the Players Championship and PGA Championship) but it also comes with a ticket to the Championship Series in 2028. Novak could’ve earned a spot in the Championship Series with good golf in 2027. He has been one of the top 100 players on the PGA Tour for the last handful of seasons. But that is no longer something he has to worry about. He doesn’t have to shoulder the burden of a 2027 season where a poor stretch could mean massive financial implications for him in 2028 and potentially alter the course of his professional career.

With a blistering week in Mexico, Andrew Novak finally became a solo PGA Tour champion and made a new future for himself.

“It absolutely changes things for me,” Novak said. “The opportunity I’m going to have is not what I had when I showed up Monday this week.”

That’s the beauty of golf and the DNA PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is trying to return to. Anything is possible if you can do what Andrew Novak did in Mexico and shoot the scores to make it so.
