Daniil Medvedev defeated Andrey Rublev, 7-5, 6-4, in the Hangzhou Open final.

The 2021 US Open champion stood tall in an all-Russian affair on Tuesday. Medvedev’s serve powered him to victory, hitting 23 aces against Rublev in Hangzhou.

“First of all, of course, I want to say a few words to Daniil [Medvedev]. After so many years, we said so many things to each other, so I don’t know what else to say. I just want to congratulate you and all your family. I hope we will have many, many more memories over the years in the future, and congrats again on the title, and good luck for the rest of the season,” said Rublev after the match.

Medvedev then responded to Rublev’s kind words during his post-match speech, sharing a hopeful prediction for their futures.

Daniil Medvedev says he wants to play Andrey Rublev in Masters 1000 and Grand Slam finals

Medvedev has now beaten Rublev to win two ATP titles. He won 6-2, 6-2 in the 2023 Dubai Tennis Championships final and 7-5, 6-4 in China. With that in mind, Medvedev didn’t want to repeat himself.

“First of all, Andrey [Rublev], I think the same. After what we said in Dubai, we don’t need to repeat each other. I’m really happy to see you in this final, and we probably played a bit worse than before in terms of results,” he said.

“We did a final of a 500, 250; now time for a Masters 1000 and then, after, in five years, a Slam! Happy to see you in a final; sorry that I served good today, but hopefully we can finish the season this strong.”

Medvedev served exceptionally well against Rublev in Hangzhou, en route to his 24th ATP title. He was 2/7 on break points, but that was enough for him to secure the win.

Medvedev then thanked his team and, in particular, his fitness coach, Leandro Mosconi, who was with him this week. The Russian only needed the third set once in China, against Coleman Wong, but Mosconi remained vital to his title bid.

“Then I want to thank my team. Here, it’s small. Leandro, thanks a lot for keeping up with me, I guess. Having a lot of fun helps, of course, in tough moments, and in good moments like this, it’s a great feeling. And thanks to everyone; I’m not going to say any names because I will forget someone, but thanks to everyone who is a part of my team, a part of my family, who is supporting me around the world,” he said.

“There are some tough moments; there are some good moments. Big thanks to my family, to my wife, who supports me no matter what. Thanks to everyone who is involved in this victory, small or big. Thanks also to everyone with whom this tournament is possible. I absolutely loved it last year, but played not so good. This year I loved it even more and played better. Thanks a lot to you guys for supporting this week. Watching a final on a workday is not easy, but you came and supported; hopefully, see you next year!”

Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev face quick turnarounds after Hangzhou Open final

It won’t be long before Medvedev and Rublev are back in action. Both players are expected to compete at this week’s ATP 500 China Open. In fact, the turnaround is so sharp that Medvedev asked how long the trophy presentations would take after he won the title.

Medvedev is currently scheduled to play Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round on Thursday, October 1. Rublev will play Dutch star Tallon Griekspoor.

Which player do you think will win the men’s singles title at the China Open this year?

If either Russian plays as well as they did in Hangzhou, they could win the China Open. But the field is strong, and the likes of Alexander Zverev and Alex de Minaur will be tough to beat.
