The Florida Gators made the 360-mile trip to Athens, Georgia, to take on the Georgia Bulldogs in a pre-midseason dual. The Florida women emerged victorious 191-107, while the Bulldog men won 197-97. Though neither result was ever in doubt, one swim caught some by surprise: Georgia sophomore Kennedi Dobson’s performance in the opening event.
Racing the 1000 free, Dobson clocked 9:21.30 to win by nearly 17 seconds, taking down the long-standing SEC and Georgia School Records of 9:23.78, set by Brittany MacLean en route to her 2014 NCAA-title-winning mile. Texas junior Jillian Cox came within 0.06 of the conference mark last January, when she swam 9:23.84 at a dual meet against Texas A&M.
Dobson’s splits included:

Entering the meet, Dobson’s lifetime best in the 1000 free was the 9:29.05 she swam at a tri-meet against Arkansas and Florida last January.
Besides her 1000 record, Dobson also won the 100 free (48.61, a season best) and the 200 IM (1:57.34), and split 47.98 on the Bulldogs’ victorious 400 free relay.
This is Dobson’s second SEC Record in as many days, after she swam 4:30.48 in the 500 free at College Swimming League Match #6 to take that record from Cox.
Dobson is coming off an electric freshman campaign in which she was runner-up in both the 500 free (4:30.70) and 1650 free (15:43.72) at the SEC Championships, swimming lifetime bests in both. The 4:30.70 stood as her 500 best until this week, while the 15:43.72 remains her 1650 PB. She also took bronze in the 200 free (1:42.20), then the second-fastest swim of her career, before lowering her best to 1:42.06 at CSL Match #6 last week. At the NCAA Championships, she went on to place third in the 500 (4:32.24), sixth in the 1650 (15:46.97) and 13th in the 200 free (1:42.97).
