Alex Eala exited the Ningbo Open on Thursday following defeat to Roland Garros semi-finalist Diana Shnaider.
Shnaider, the sixth seed in China, triumphed 7-5, 6-4 on Centre Court and will now play American youngster Iva Jovic in the quarter-finals.
It was a tumultuous affair for both players, as evidenced by 10 breaks of serve throughout the course of the match.
Shnaider ultimately held her nerve in the critical moments, much to the despair of Eala’s fervent fanbase.
Eala will now shift her attention to the final WTA 500 event of the year: the Pan Pacific Open.
With the Filipina’s next event fast approaching, let’s take a look back at how she has performed at the WTA 500 level throughout the course of 2026.
Alex Eala’s performances at WTA 500 events in 2026
Eala began her 2026 WTA 500 journey at the Abu Dhabi Open in February.
The Filipina performed well at the event, defeating Zeynep Sonmez and Aliaksandra Sasnovich before losing to second seed Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Will Alex Eala win a Grand Slam in 2027?
If so, which one does she take?
Eala did not compete in another WTA 500 event until the clay-court swing, and it is fair to say that the youngster struggled to make her mark on the surface.
Eala won just one match across three WTA 500 tournaments on the surface, reaching the second round in Linz and suffering first-round exits in Stuttgart and Strasbourg.
Eala’s struggles did not last for long, as she bounced back emphatically on the grass courts.
Following a disappointing second-round defeat to Iva Jovic at the Queen’s Club, Eala produced some of her best tennis to reach the Berlin Open semi-finals, beating Donna Vekic, Elena Rybakina and Elina Svitolina en route.
Eala was eventually stopped by Linda Noskova, who won her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July.
Following a disappointing first-round exit in Bad Homburg and an impressive run to the Wimbledon fourth round, Eala travelled west to compete in the Washington Open.
The highlight of Eala’s year occurred in the American capital, as she defeated Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula en route to her first WTA Tour title.
Eala did not compete in another WTA 500 event until the Singapore Open in September, where she was stunned in the first round by Tatiana Prozorova.
